Part I: Politeness: A survival guide

  Scenario 1: You’re drowning in a river and you see a passer-by

  NOT BRITISH: HELP!!

BRITISH: Excuse me sir, I’m terribly sorry to bother you but I wonder if you would mind helping me for a moment as long as it’s no trouble of course.

Scenario 2: You’re the captain of a plane and you’re flying through a cloud of volcanic ash, when all of the sudden, all of the engines stop working.

NOT BRITISH: This is the captain speaking, we are experiencing engine failure. Can all passengers return for their seats and cabin crew prepare for emergency landing?

BRITISH: Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress.

Note: This is a true story. British Airways pilot Eric Moody said this in 1982 after flying through a cloud of volcanic ash over Indonesia.

  Part II: Types of politeness

  Indirect Questions

The British tend to phrase a question or a request in an indirect way. For example, ‘Do you know what he is doing?’ rather than, ‘What is he doing?’ This is considered to be polite behaviour because the conversational partner is not under as much pressure than something that was more direct.

  Understatements

We don’t often talk about emotions or feelings and you can see this by the continuous use of understatements. For example, if you hear us say, “that’s not bad at all,” you can be sure that it’s actually really fantastic.

  Hedging

We often don’t give very direct answers or statements to things to avoid too much commitment. This is known as hedging. For example, “there might, perhaps, be a slightly better solution to this problem” What I’d really be saying is “I don’t like your idea.”
There might, perhaps, be a slightly better solution to this problem. I don’t like your idea.

  Euphemisms

A euphemism can be used to substitute a word or expression that can be considered explicit for something that is inoffensive. For example, “Died” is often replaced with “passed away” in the UK. Euphemisms are used often in the UK to make a situation appear less drastic such as when the pilot spoke to the passengers.

Part III: Translating British into normal
