The Vanity Fair article, headlined with a quote from an unnamed Trump family friend who said Melania Trump “didn’t want this come hell or high water,” details how it was the first lady who pushed her husband in 2014 to make a firm decision to run or not run for president. But the article portrays Melania Trump’s effort to force a decision out of her husband as having backfired, thrusting her into a public role – and accompanying bright spotlight – that she did not want.

马上学

据韦伯斯特在线词典的解释,come hell or high water可以理解为“used to say that something will definitely happen or be done even though other events or situations might make it difficult”。

Melania Trump was criticized in August for wearing high heels before heading to Texas in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, although she changed into sneakers before landing.

"She's wearing high-heels like many of you would do. And they went after her, but she didn't know, and then when she got off the plane in Texas she was wearing sneakers, which she had with her. And they [media] know it was dishonest," Trump told the crowd, adding sarcastically, "You know, she's going to go into the floods with her high heels."

The president said that the first lady had dressed up "out of respect for the White House," adding that she "wants to look good leaving the front entrance."

He continued: "So she dresses up, and she puts on formal shoes, high heels, and she leaves the White House going to Texas, or going to wherever we want to go — Florida, actually twice. So walking through that front door, she did. Now, she has sneakers in the meantime with her so she can change into other clothing when we're walking through where a hurricane is just leaving, and she took tremendous abuse."

Trump added that people he has met have not appeared to mind the first lady's heels. "But the good news is that the people understand it – I was making a speech, and women were holding up — 'we love your stilettos.' They really do love her. And she's a good person," Trump said.

According to Vanity Fair, Brzezinski revealed to Melania Trump on New Year's Eve that she had recently had a procedure to tighten skin on her neck. In the report, Scarborough said that Trump was impressed by the procedure, and asked for the name of the doctor who performed it. "Donald kept saying, ‘That’s incredible. You can’t even tell? Who did it? Who did it?’" Scarborough told Vanity Fair. "He kept asking for the name of the doctor. He literally asked 10 times."

MSNBC responded with this statement: "It's a sad day for America when the president spends his time bullying, lying and spewing petty personal attacks instead of doing his job."

The president's deputy press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, defended the tweets by saying Trump was responding to the "outrageous attacks that take place" on "Morning Joe" and other shows. Trump refuses to be "bullied," Sanders said on Fox News. "This is a president who fights fire with fire."

The first lady responded in a statement through her press office to multiple outlets , criticizing the "Morning Joe" co-hosts for using her to "further their own agenda." “It is sad when people try to further their own agenda by commenting on me and my family, especially when they don't know me," the statement read.

"As the First Lady has stated publicly in the past, when her husband gets attacked, he will punch back 10 times harder," the first lady's communications director Stephanie Grisham said in a statement to CNN when asked about the tweets.

Boy Talk”

“I said to my husband that, you know, the language is inappropriate,” she said. “And I was surprised, because that is not the man I know.”

“That’s why I was surprised,” she said. “Because I said, like, I don’t know that person that would talk that way. And that he would say that kind of stuff in private. I’ve heard many different stuff, boys talk.”
