   1. Cold calling can work.

“They said, ‘There is one company in town called the Zimmerman Agency, but they only accept seniors,’” she recalled in her book.

She went back to her dorm and researched the Zimmerman Agency. After taking some time to study the company’s website, she picked up the phone to cold-phone: “Hello, this is Lauren Berger calling. May I speak with your internship coordinator?”

She got through, and the woman told her to send in a resume and cover letter.

   2. Take immediate action when you get a lead.

Berger e-mailed her materials to the company’s internship coordinator that evening. The next morning, her phone rang at 8 am. The coordinator was so impressed by Berger’s promptness, she offered her an interview.

   3. Make yourself available.

The internship coordinator from Zimmerman wanted to know if she was available to come into the office the following day. “Berger made herself available on the day and at the time the coordinator requested.

   4. Prepare for the interview.

Before each interview, Berger would do further researches about the company, including the firm’s mission statement and executive biographies. “Look for things you have in common with the people who run the company,” she advises.

   5. Say you’re ready to start immediately.

Sometimes, employers tell applicants they can take time to think about whether they want the job. Berger says you should break in and say, “I know I want this.” Berger’s eagerness and persistence came through and she got the Zimmerman internship.

Treat the internship as you would any other job. Take your assignments seriously, even when it seems that you're doing busywork. Maintain a professional attitude and demeanor.

Arrive on time, or a few minutes early. Strolling in to the office late gives the impression that you don't care and that you aren't serious about the internship or your career. And stay all day — leaving early because you are bored or have other plans is unacceptable.

Dress appropriately. Sweatpants and a baseball cap are fine to wear to class, but professional office environments generally have dress codes. If you don't have a full professional wardrobe yet, now is the time to start acquiring business attire.

Turn off your cell phone, iPod or other electronics while you're in the office. You may think that no one notices that you're texting back and forth with your friends, but they do. Focus on your tasks and leave the socializing for after office hours.

Ask questions. If you don't understand something, or need help, asking for guidances better than making a mistake. Asking questions demonstrates your desire to learn, an important trait in any intern.

Maintain a positive attitude, even when you're doing menial tasks. Everyone has to start somewhere, and complaining about having to make copies or stuff envelopes is not likely to get you to the top of the list for more interesting assignments.

Seek constructive criticism. When you complete a task or project, ask for feedback on your performance and ways that you can improve. Actively looking for learning opportunities creates a positive impression, and helps you continuously improve over the course of your internship.

Volunteer for extra projects, and seek opportunities to expand your experience. Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do; if you finish your work, ask for another assignment instead of wasting time.

Ready?Go!
