China's official rescue team worked with local rescuers to pull a pregnant woman out of the rubble of a building that collapsed during a devastating earthquake in Antakya, Türkiye, early on Thursday morning.
The 82-member team headed to the city without any rest after arriving in the city of Adana at 4:30 am local time on Wednesday. They then spent about five hours traveling to Antakya, the ministry said in a news release on Thursday.
After holding talks with local governments, during which workers from the Chinese embassy also participated, the team found a site to set up camp, the release said. Members of the team threw themselves into humanitarian rescue operations immediately afterwards.
A powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Türkiye's southern province of Kahramanmaras at 4:17 a.m. local time (0117 GMT) on Monday, followed by a magnitude 6.4 quake a few minutes later in the country's southern province of Gaziantep and a magnitude 7.6 earthquake at 1:24 p.m. local time (1024 GMT) in Kahramanmaras.
