Talk Radio host Mark Dolan has cut up his face mask live on air, saying it's the "only way" to get the country back to normal.

The presenter told his listeners: "If you want to save lives and get the country back on track, the only option is to get back to normal and the first step to achieving that is to get rid of these wretched, god awful, damned, blinking, uncomfortable, scientifically empty, useless masks."

"And if people do following the rulings on face masks such as on a flight, if you want to have a sandwich or a coffee you're allowed to take the mask off…How does that make any sense? There're double standards everywhere."

"The damage to our country from COVID measures is now a clear andpresent danger, not only to our way of life and our jobs but to many thousands of lives too."

"The mask obsessives are the COVID cowards who would happily see every last industry closed down and every last job disappear until we reach a state of COVID- zero."

Several people on Twitter responded to a video shared by the official Talk Radio feed saying they agreed masks were "dehumanising" and "depressing", others boasted that they had never worn one.

The UK health secretary has commented on Sunday’s sharp rise in coronavirus cases, after nearly 3,000 more people tested positive. Matt Hancock said: 'The rise in the number of cases is concerning ... We've seen in other countries across the world and in Europe this sort of rise in the cases amongst younger people leading to a rise across the population as a whole'.

Hancock added: "It's so important that everybody does their bit and follows the social distancing because it doesn't matter how old you are, how affected you might be by this disease, you can pass the disease on to others. So don't pass the disease on to your grandparents if you're a young person, everybody needs to follow the social distancing."

Despite the sharp rise in cases, Mr Hancock said the government was right to reopen schools "because of the impact on children of not getting an education", adding that workplaces which have reopened are "Covid-secure".

The Department for Education said for most areas of England it is keeping its guidance against using face coverings — but schools will be able to make their own decision whether to ask pupils and staff to wear them.

Pupils will have to wear masks in communal areas of schools such as hallways — but not classrooms.

From 1 September, secondary schools in areas of England where there are local lockdowns (like Manchester and Birmingham) will have to ask staff and pupils to wear face coverings when moving around the building and in communal areas where social distancing is difficult to maintain.

Masks will not be mandated in the classroom and are not required wearing for schools elsewhere in the country — although leaders will have the discretion to require face coverings if they believe that is "right in their particular circumstances," said the government.
