US President Donald Trump joked at a campaign rally on Saturday that the media's reporting on the coronavirus pandemic would cease after Election Day, despite the US reaching a new daily high in case numbers on Friday.

"That's all I hear about now. That's all I hear. Turn on television—'COVID, COVID, COVID, COVID, COVID, COVID.' A plane goes down. 500 people dead, they don't talk about it. 'COVID, COVID, COVID, COVID.' By the way, on November 4 you won't hear about it anymore," Trump said as the audience cheered, suggesting he would be victorious in this year's election.

President Donald Trump on Saturday morning cast his early, in-person ballot in West Palm Beach, Florida.

After voting, Trump expressed the sense of confidence that he had in the process.

"It was a very secure vote, much more secure than when you send in a ballot I can tell you that," he said. "I voted for a guy named Trump."

As of Oct. 23, more than 52 million people have already voted nationwide, including more than 36 million who voted by mail and more than 16 million who voted in-person, according to the US Elections Project.

The number of Covid-19 cases reported across the country is rising so fast that US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams warns it could be the worst week since the pandemic began. 'This week, we will probably have our highest number of cases that we've ever had on a daily basis in the United States,' Adams said Friday at the Meridian Global Leadership Summit on Global Health Diplomacy.

"We’ll easily get to six-digit numbers in terms of the number of cases,” Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNN Friday night. And deaths will rise dramatically in the next three to four weeks, usually about two to three weeks after new cases.

Former FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb warns the coronavirus death toll this winter could be 'staggering,' due to the sheer number of people likely to be infected.

Despite these positive developments, Gottlieb said the challenge the US is facing now is simply how widespread the virus is across the country. “Mortality is going to be down, but we’re going to be infecting so many people that the daily death statistics are going to be staggering,” said Gottlieb.

There could be “well above 1,000” new deaths per day reported in the weeks ahead, he said. “And we might retest some of the totals that we saw in the spring, when we were reporting 2,000 deaths a day related to this virus, just because of the sheer number of people we’re likely to infect heading into the winter right now.”

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Friday that President Donald Trump has not attended a coronavirus task force meeting in "several months" and the meetings themselves have greatly "diminished".

"We used to have them during the early spring, when things were really hot, particularly the northeastern part, when New York was having a terrible time, we were meeting, five, six, sometimes seven days a week, that then sometime a few months ago things pivoted around to more of the economic reopening, as it were, of the country," Fauci said.

Fauci indicated that Trump is seeking medical advice from other sources. Asked by interviewer if the president is more reliant on Dr. Scott Atlas than him, Fauci said yes.

Atlas's role as an adviser was announced in August and was met with backlash from the medical community, given that as a radiologist, he had no training in epidemiology or infectious disease, and public health experts feared that Atlas would replace Dr. Anthony Fauci on the coronavirus task force.
