Taikonauts Jing Haipeng, Zhu Yangzhu and Gui Haichao will carry out the Shenzhou-16 spaceflight mission to the China Space Station, the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) announced at a press conference on Monday.
Commander Jing comes from the first batch of the country's reserve astronauts, and the other two are from the third batch, with tomorrow being the first flight mission for the batch.
Shenzhou-16 is the second flight mission of China's manned space program this year, and the first crewed mission after China's space station entered the application and development stage.
The trio, the first crew after the CSS entered the application and development phase, consists of three types of astronauts, said the agency.
Taikonaut Jing Haipeng will be the commander and pilot astronaut, Zhu Yangzhu will be the flight engineer and Gui Haichao the payload specialist.
Coming from the astronaut brigade of the People's Liberation Army, Jing and Zhu will be mainly responsible for direct control and management of spacecraft and carrying out technological experiments.
Gui Haichao, a professor at Beihang University, will be responsible for conducting the in-orbit operation of aerospace science experiments and research.
Gui has received professional training in science, space engineering and other fields and has rich experience in operation, said the CMSA.
The selection of the third batch of reserve astronauts, which finished in September 2020, included seven pilot astronauts, seven flight engineers and four payload specialists.
After more than two years of training, they have completed the prescribed training content, passed flight qualification assessments and are all equipped to carry out flight missions, according to Lin Xiqiang, deputy director of the CMSA.
