听了愚公的一席话，大家精神振作，下定决心移动大山，连老奶奶也不再犹豫了。见此情景，愚公点头说道：“既然决心已定，那我们就一起商量如何动工吧。”

Hearing what Yugong said, people pulled themselves together and made up their minds to remove the two mountains. Even granny fully agreed with his plan. Seeing this sight, Yugong nodded and said, “Since our determination is in place, now we’ll discuss how to start working.”

于是，经过一番商量，大家一致决定，把挖出来的石头和泥土扔到东方的渤海边和北方很远的一个地方去。

Therefore, after a short discussion, they all agreed to remove the rocks and earth to the edge of Bohai Sea in the east and to another faraway location in the north.



说干就干。勤快的愚公，在第二天一早，就带着儿孙们开始挖这两座大山了。

With the decisions made, people began to work. On the morning of the next day, the sons and grandsons of the family, led by the diligent Yugong, started to excavate the two mountains.


 
山上的石头又大又重，两座大山高得看不到顶，愚公一家人每天也挖不了多少，还要把挖出来的泥土和石子用箩筐运走，很久才能往返一趟。但他们没有泄气，仍旧日复一日地挖山、装筐、背土。

The mountains were so high that their tops could not be seen and the rocks were large and heavy. The whole family couldn’t dig very much each day and, moreover, the rocks and earth scooped out had to be moved away in large, bamboo baskets and dumped. This required a rather long trip, but they didn’t feel discouraged and still kept on digging, shoveling and transporting day after day.



他们的坚持，也深深地打动了邻居们，邻居家六七岁的小孩子也蹦蹦跳跳地跑来帮忙。

Their perseverance deeply touched their neighbors; some children even came over to help.

邻村有个名叫智叟的老人听说这件事后，特地跑来找愚公。他劝愚公说：“愚公呀，你这样做真的太不明智了。你和你家人这点有限的精力，怎么可能把这两座大山挖平呢？赶紧停下来吧，不要再浪费时间了！”

An old man named Zhisou (literally, a smart old man) in a neighboring village heard about this and came by just to talk Yugong out of it. “It was so unwise of you to make such a decision. Your energy and that of your family is very limited. How could you possibly level the two huge mountains? Let them stop now; don’t waste any more time!” he said.



愚公笑了笑，不慌不忙地回答说：“你这样想，就有些目光短浅了。我一个人的能力的确有限，但即使我死了，还有我的几个儿子在这里呀。我的儿子们老去了，我还有孙子们在继续挖。孙子又生孩子，孩子再生孩子。人类的子子孙孙世代繁衍是没有穷尽的，而山却不会再增高了。只要我们不放弃，一直坚持下去，有什么山挖不平、搬不走呢？”

Yugong laughed and said slowly, “You are so shortsighted to think of me that way. Indeed, my individual capability is limited, but after I die, I still have sons here. When my sons are getting old, I still have grandsons here. My grandsons will have their children and their children’s children. The posterity of mankind is endless while the height of the two mountains cannot be increased any more. If we refuse to give up and stick with our digging, why can't we remove the two mountains?”




智叟见劝不动愚公，无可奈何地摇摇头回去了。

Zhisou, seeing that he could not dissuade Yugong from his plan, shook his head with a sigh and went back to his village.

而当时两座大山的山神见愚公带着家人不停地挖山，也害怕了。他们怕愚公真的把山挖平了。那样的话，堂堂山神就没有地方住了！

Seeing the whole family led by Yugong continuing their digging and shoveling and carrying, the two mountain deities grew anxious. They feared the mountains could really be leveled by Yugong. If that happened, the dignified mountain deities would have nowhere to live!



于是，两座大山的山神就上天庭，向玉皇大帝报告了这件事。

Therefore, they went up to heaven in a cloud and reported the matter to the Jade Emperor.



玉皇大帝被愚公坚持不懈的精神感动了。他派了两个大力神下凡，把两座大山背走，放到离愚公家很远的地方去了。

The Jade Emperor was touched by Yugong’s perseverance. He ordered two deities of super-strength to descend to the world. They carried the two mountains away on their backs, relocating them to a place far away from Yugong’s house.


 
从此，愚公家这里不再有高山阻隔，愚公和他的后代可以很方便地出门看到外面的世界了。

After that Yugong’s house was no longer blocked by high mountains, and it became very convenient for Yugong and his posterity to go out into the world.
