Long long ago, there stood an empty temple on a mountain.

One day, a young monk walked there. Seeing the temple unoccupied, he cleaned it thoroughly and settled down in it.

Every day, he would chant sutras, sit in meditation, and do some cleaning. He would also set about carrying water from a river at the foot of the mountain, for use each day. It was a simple life of peace and tranquility.

One day, another monk came by. He was thin and tall. Having travelled a long way, he was very thirsty. He went into the temple and asked the young monk for a drink.

The young monk took him to a large barrel, scooped up a ladle of water, and passed it to him. He took it, drinking it all in one go. But one ladle was not enough, and he drank several more before fully quenching his thirst.

Now the young monk looked into the barrel. He went into a rage because there was hardly any water left.

“I’ve fetched the water from afar,” he told the thin monk. “Now that you’ve taken so much of it, you must go and carry some for me,” he demanded, passing the latter a carrying pole and two buckets.

His words embarrassed the thin monk. Picking up the buckets, the thin monk set out.

Before long however, he turned back.“I only took half a barrel of your water. Why should I carry two buckets for you? It’s unfair, and I won’t go,” he said to the young monk.

Thus the two monks entered into a quarrel, and neither would back down. Without finding a solution, they sat down back-to-back and started to chant sutras, both huffing and puffing.

The sun was about to set. Half a day had passed, and they had no water to drink, although both felt thirsty on what was such a hot day.

Then the young monk had an idea. Let’s go and carry some water together,” he suggested. The thin monk agreed.

Picking up the carrying pole and a bucket, they set out. “Wait,”the young monk cried. He ran into the temple and came out with a ruler. He measured the carrying pole carefully, and made a mark in the middle.

“Let’s hang the bucket right here, so that we will make an equal share of effort,” he told the thin monk. The two set out in great delight.

The thin monk also settled down in the temple.

Every day, the two monks would sit side by side to meditate, chant sutras, do cleaning, and fetch water together. They also reclaimed a piece of land to grow vegetables. Equally sharing in all kinds of work, including tilling, watering, and harvesting the vegetable plot, they lived in peace with each other.
