![]() President Xi Jinping visits Anhuali Community in Beijing to learn about local epidemic prevention and supply of daily necessities on Feb 10. XINHUA This year’s Spring Festival has been unforgettable, as the outbreak of a novel coronavirus led to drastic nationwide disease prevention measures. As of Feb 11, the number of confirmed cases on the Chinese mainland had reached 44,653, with 1,113 deaths, according to China’s National Health Commission. Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Feb 10 that China can score a full victory against the epidemic. Speaking during an inspection of epidemic prevention in Beijing, Xi said the whole Party, the armed forces and the people of all ethnic groups in China stand together with the people of Hubei province and Wuhan, which are at the center of the outbreak. “Wuhan is a heroic city and people of Hubei and Wuhan are heroic people who have never been crushed by any difficulty and danger in history. As long as our comrades work together, fight bravely and overcome difficulties, we certainly can score a full victory in the fight against the epidemic,” Xi said. On Feb 3, Xi pointed out that the epidemic’s prevention and control require not only medical treatment but all-around efforts. He said that all work should support fighting the virus. Indeed, the whole nation has taken action. As of Feb 11, about 12,000 medical staff had arrived in Wuhan for the virus prevention and control, The Paper noted. And in just a dozen days, two special hospitals – Huoshenshan and Leishenshan – were built in the city. The Ministry of Finance allocated 4.4 billion yuan to support the battle against the virus. Companies are encouraged to create ways to make workplaces less populated or allow staff to take shifts. The school semester has been postponed from kindergartens to universities. Meanwhile, regulations were issued to criminalize acts including spreading rumors, and illegal wildlife hunting and trading. Internationally, China has created a climate for collaboration by sharing information. “China wasted no time ... Thanks to that, we now have epidemiologists all over the world looking at the genetic makeup of that virus and comparing it to their own sequencing. That alone is very reassuring and will encourage more global collaboration,” Oliver Stelling, a communications adviser in Dubai, told China Daily. “A contagious virus recognizes no borders,” said Koh King Kee, president of the Malaysia-based think tank Centre for New Inclusive Asia. “Beating it requires international collective efforts … in the interest of all mankind.”
