Online shopping and telemedicine have also helped make life easier during this difficult time. The internet ensures that a quarantined life doesn’t have to be done in isolation as it enables us to adapt to a new way of life. On March 25, the G20 summit was held via the internet. This is the first time that the leaders of the world’s 20 major economies have held a summit online, noted Xinhua. On April 7, the State Council announced that the 127th China Import and Export Fair, which was scheduled to be held in Guangzhou on April 15, will be held virtually in June, according to Xinhua. This year, with the help of information technology, companies from all over the world will be able to display their products online. They can also conduct negotiations and place orders from home, according to Li Xingqian, director of the Ministry Commerce’s foreign trade department. “Organizing the event online is not only a practical measure to deal with the pandemic, but also an innovative development to the traditional fair,” said Li, during a State Council news conference on April 10. Indeed, developments in the digitalization arising from China’s anti-coronavirus fight are set to accelerate the country’s digital transformation beyond the epidemic, according to China Daily. The internet of things, 5G communications, artificial intelligence and big data have played an important role amid the outbreak, from healthcare and medical supplies to education and logistics. “Digital technology has improved significantly. We have accumulated a lot of experience and a lot of so-called infrastructure for emerging industries... there are signs that the country is ready to invest, in the digital transformation of traditional industries, including services transformation, information management, and intelligent manufacturing,” said Zhang Lianqi, vice-head of the Chinese Tax Institute. Wang Yihan, 16, from Fuzhou No 1 High School, has already enjoyed the benefits of digital technology. It helps her visit museums online while isolated at home. “It’s very convenient. Whenever I have time, I can take a virtual tour to appreciate the cultural relics with detailed guidance. It’s really a good way for exhibitions, even after the outbreak,” she said.
