Zhang Yuxuan produces music on Bilibili for her more than a million followers. PROVIDED TO TEENS “She got a beautiful eye, walk in a line, smile with her type; She knows all about life, never ask why, driving everyone crazy, crazy …” Everyone is surprised that this English song, She, which has so far topped the charts with more than 10 million views on popular video platform Bilibili, was produced by a 15-year-old girl, Zhang Yuxuan, in only 30 minutes. “A melody suddenly popped into my head when I was having math class,” Zhang, a student at the Shenzhen Arts School, majoring in violin, said in her video titled How to Turn a Melody into a Song. “I quickly wrote down four lines of lyrics and the melody in my notebook, and after class, I rushed home and took less than half an hour to finish the song.” With her crisp voice and humorous expression, the video of the song She topped Bilibili’s recommended list. She has become one of the most popular music vlogger on the platform. Dubbed a “young Chinese Taylor Swift”, this teenage vlogger now has 1.28 million followers. Zhang told Xinhua News that the song was inspired by US actress Anne Hathaway, who played Andrea “Andy” Sachs in the Hollywood blockbuster The Devil Wears Prada. “I like Hathaway’s personality, so I wanted to write a song for her,” Zhang said. “I want to send out a message about girl power – that girls can be strong and independent but also cute.” Zhang fell in love with English songs when she was a primary school student. She registered on Bilibili when she was 13 years old, and in 2019, posted her first original song December Composer and quickly won many followers. In her videos, everything from bottles to pieces of candy can become musical instruments. A video titled How to Make Music at School without Instruments has been watched over 1.9 million times. In the video, she makes musical loops with a pencil bag and a desk. “I often come up with whimsical ideas about what I’ve seen and heard and then put them into my songs,” Zhang said. “It’s a great outlet for me to express myself, and in this way I won’t be too sad about negative things in life.” Zhang told Xinhua that she wants to study at a top music school, such as the Berklee College of Music in the US and become a singer-songwriter in the future. “Everything in life can be written into song,” she said. “But I still have a lot to learn including my main subjects like English skills and composition. I hope I can become a songwriter and work with the musicians I like.”
