A school from Zhejiang province won big. Shaoxing No 1 High School took home nine awards in the category targeting youth amateurs under age 17, including two first place prizes and four second place prizes. As a high-level and large-scale competition for youth, BD-CASTIC was launched in 2010 by the Department of Science, Technology and Information of the Ministry of Education. It aims to cultivate innovative, versatile and skilled talents for BeiDou-related industries. One of the first place prizes went to a smart system for safe driving built by Qian Weicheng and his team. “As more automobiles run on the road, transportation accidents have increased,” the 16-year-old said. “So we want to develop a system to prevent collisions and lower risks by improving driver performance.” The system can calculate real-time safety distances, monitor the temperature inside the car and detect other problems such as drunk driving. Zhang Yantao and his team invented a multi-functional intelligent robot for epidemic prevention. The robot can help reduce contact between medical professionals and COVID-19 patients by carrying out tasks such as distribution, temperature measurement and disinfection. The team won second prize for their invention. Both of their inventions are based on the application of BeiDou Navigation Satellite Systems (BDS). “Our system mainly adopts three services provided by BDS: high-accuracy positioning, traffic information and remote sensing,” Qian said. To complete their inventions, they needed to learn about the theory and application of BDS, which they acquired from their “BeiDou Class”, a program jointly initiated by Peking University and China Association for Science and Technology in 2020. Currently, the class is the only one established in middle schools around the country to cultivate talents for BeiDou science and technology. Over 170 students have joined the program. “We hope the program will inspire students’ innovative spirit by figuring out and solving problems,” said Zhou Wenlong, the project leader.
