Soul tells the story of middle-school music teacher Joe Gardner, who has wanted nothing more than to be a musician. One day, he gets the chance after impressing some jazz musicians at a club. But before he can get his big break, an untimely accident takes his life, causing his soul to be sent to the Great Beyond. Gardner manages to escape to the Great Before – a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks and interests before they go to Earth. Here Gardner meets a soul, 22, who he tries to convince of the beauty of living.

Essentially, “a soul who doesn’t want to live meets a soul who doesn’t want to die,” director Pete Doctor told the website Inside the Magic.

Soul has a 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s also received rave reviews from those who saw early releases of the film.

With its themes of musical aspiration and mortality, Soul has a close relationship with the 2017 Pixar production, Coco, Wendy Ide wrote in her review on the website Screen Daily. “[Soul is] visually glorious, frequently very funny and genuinely profound.”
