Regarded as the “prelude to the Oscars”, the Golden Globe Awards is now under fire. Recently, it has caused controversy over its corruption, racism, sexism and unprofessionalism. In May, NBC announced that it would not air the Golden Globes in 2022. This came after the decision by other media moguls such as WarnerMedia and Netflix who have ended their ties with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organizer of the awards. Actors like Scarlett Johansson have spoken out against the HFPA. Tom Cruise has even returned all three of his Golden Globe trophies. Founded in 1943, the HFPA is an organization that now consists of 87 international journalists who vote for the nominees and winners of the awards. The protest against the HFPA began after the Los Angeles Times published a report with headlines criticizing it as “a tiny group full of quirky characters – and no black members”. “In response to criticism, the HFPA has promised to reform. It has planned to increase membership of black journalists by at least 13 percent,” The Hollywood Reporter noted. It also approved a new Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct. “Any ... harassment, discrimination and abuse” will be taken as violations of the new code, Variety reported. However, these changes will take time and work. “Though [it] will likely continue to exist ... it has now lost its perch as one of the most prominent Hollywood awards shows,” the Observer, a weekly newspaper, commented. ![]() (Translator & Editor: Wang Qianrong (Intern) AND Luo Sitian)
