It was Lionel Messi again. The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward, 34, was honored the Ballon d’Or for the seventh time on Nov 29. It is awarded annually by France Football magazine. Messi beat 29 other nominees, including Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski was the favorite for the prize in 2020, but it was canceled due to COVID-19. Some people have cast doubts on Messi’s award when comparing his performance to Lewandowski at club level. According to AFP, Messi scored 38 goals in 48 games in his final season with Barcelona and also helped the club win the Copa del Rey before moving to PSG in August. He scored his first goal for PSG in his sixth appearance. By comparison, Lewandowski ended last season with remarkable 41 Bundesliga goals. But this year, Messi helped his country Argentina win their first Copa America title since 1993. This historic victory might have been the determining factor helping Messi get the honor, CBS Sports reported. “I don’t know if it’s the best year of my life. I’ve had a long career, but it was a special one with the title with Argentina after tough times.” It is natural to feel sympathy for Lewandowski, but for Messi, “to achieve that level of sustained success at any time would be spectacular,” The Guardian noted. “The Messi of a decade ago may well have been superior to the Messi of today. [But] in 2021, there has been no man better,” Sky Sports commented. ![]() (Translator & Editor: Li Xinzhu AND Luo Sitian)
