Also on Jan. 7, the London Evening Standard published a story with a headline : “Over 10,000 Australian Camels to Be Shot From Helicopters Because They Drink Too Much Water.”

Similar stories, with similar headlines, were published by the CNN, the CBS News, and the Sky News.

Amidst the devastating wildfires spreading across Australia, up to 10,000 camels will be shot and killed following complaints that they are drinking too much water. The cull begins Wednesday and lasts approximately five days.

Aboriginal officials in the remote northwest of South Australia approved the cull. The area's local government, Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY), said in a memo posted on Facebook that "extremely large groups of camels and other feral animals in and around communities" are "putting pressure on the remote Aboriginal communities" as they search for water.

There is also concern the animals are contributing to global warming as they emit methane equivalent to one tonne of carbon dioxide a year.

Marita Baker, an APY board member, told The Australian newspaper that her community had been inundated by the creatures as they hunt for water. "We have been stuck in stinking hot and uncomfortable conditions, feeling unwell, because the camels are coming in and knocking down fences, getting in around the houses and trying to get to water through air conditioners,'' she told the newspaper.

"With the current ongoing dry conditions the large camel threatening the APY communities and infrastructure, camel control is needed," the note added.

It ays the culls will be conducted in "accordance with the highest standards of animal welfare".

“Professional shooters will hunt the animals from helicopters. Some of the camels will be left where they are killed, but those that are accessible will be burnt or buried, “according to The Australian.

The feral camel population would double every nine years if a pest control plan is not undertaken, National Feral Camel Management Plan claimed. There are believed to be more than 1 million camels in Australia and the country's camel population is growing rapidly.

Sydney University Ecology Professor Chris Dickman said 480 million animals had been killed in New South Wales alone including mammals, birds and reptiles.
