The Lebanese cabinet announced on Wednesday a state of emergency in Beirut for two weeks. Health Minister Hamad Hassan announced that so far the explosions have left 135 people dead and 5,000 others injured. A massive explosion rocked the Lebanese capital of Beirut on Tuesday.
A video in which a Lebanese grandmother played "Auld Lang Syne" on a piano in her home surrounded by debris has gone viral on social media on Thursday. The moment, which the granddaughter described as "beauty from ashes" was recorded after the devastating explosion hit Beirut, Lebanon on Tuesday.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun said in the statement it was "unacceptable" that so much explosive material was stored in a warehouse "without taking preventive measures while endangering the safety of citizens." Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab insisted that those responsible for the disaster be punished.

Diab declared Wednesday a national mourning day for the victims of the explosions. He urged friendly countries to help Lebanon overcome the repercussions of the disastrous explosions.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) says some of its naval peacekeepers were injured — some seriously — by the explosion that rocked Beirut on Tuesday. A maritime task force ship was also damaged by the explosion.
