![]() Chinese champion gamer Jian Zihao recently retired at age 23. XINHUA Every era comes to an end, and so did that of Uzi (Jian Zihao). As one of the greatest players of the Chinese battle arena game League of Legends (LoL), Uzi is known for his role as Attack Damage Carry (ADC). The legendary Esports player officially announced his retirement at age 23 on June 3 due to health problems, including shoulder and hand injuries, which have become too painful to bear. During his eight-year career, Uzi has gone through ups and downs. At age 15, Uzi started playing LoL professionally in the Royal Club, the forerunner of the current Royal Never Give Up (RNG). While Uzi’s parents didn’t support him, he didn’t give in and continuously proved to be one of the most skillful players in the world. At the 2013 LoL World Championship, Uzi was pitted against and defeated the team Oh My God (OMG) in what was a seemingly unwinnable situation after all his teammates were “killed”. This awarded Uzi international fame. Uzi stood at the peak of his career in 2018 when he helped RNG sweep multiple championships in many events, including the 2018 Asian Games, and Mid-Season Invitational (MSI), giving China international Esports recognition. “The Asian Games also changed the minds of many people that Esports are not merely playing computer games,” he told CGTN. But he suffered a loss during the 2018 LoL World Championship. “If I could start it over, I [would] do better,” Uzi said. To be a top professional player, Uzi practiced strenuously for over 10 hours every day. Intensive training brought injuries. In an early 2015 interview, Uzi talked about his injuries, “Once I went to the hospital for a check-up and the doctor said my arms are similar to that of a 40-to 50-year-old.” Besides that, he has been diagnosed with Type II diabetes due to an unhealthy lifestyle. Uzi has been trying to control the disease through diet and exercise. For Uzi, the only title he did not win was the LoL World Championship. But all hope is not yet shattered. As Uzi told CGTN, “If my physical and mental health could be resumed in the best state, I will be back to my beloved Esports.”
