Students leave their gaokao testing site, looking relieved and happy. XINHUA This year’s gaokao concluded on June 10. A record 10.78 million students around China took this year’s gaokao. So what is next for these students and what information may be helpful for those taking the test in the future? 1. When will the results come out? According to CCTV News, many regions have announced the dates on which exam scores will be released. They are mainly between June 23 and 26. Jiangxi, Gansu, Anhui and Sichuan provinces are expected to release gaokao results on June 23. Anhui province will also announce the minimum admission score for each batch at the same time. Guangdong province will release the results around June 26. But in Guangdong, the results can only be accessed by the candidates themselves. 2. New college application options The results signal the beginning of the college application process. According to CGTN, the Ministry of Education added 37 new undergraduate (本科) majors this year, covering nine categories, including law, education and history. A total of 43 universities have approved new majors, and most of them will start to recruit (招收) students for the first time this year. Meanwhile, students from eight provincial-level regions, including Hebei, Liaoning, Jiangsu and Chongqing, sat for the “new gaokao”. The reform adopted a “3+1+2” program: three compulsory tests: Chinese, math and a foreign language; one elective test, a choice between physics and history; and, two elective tests picked from four subjects – politics, geography, chemistry and biology. In Hunan, for example, colleges can set up several “institution professional groups (院校专业组)” in the same category (physics or history). Each group arranges several sets of testing subjects, which are required for the same major. Candidates from Hunan can apply for up to 45 institution professional groups. 3. Application notices Almost every candidate will have a recruitment handbook published by the local education department, which provides basic information on schools and subjects. To better guide the application process this year, many local authorities are also offering professional guidance by setting up consultant platforms and other free guidance services. People should be wary of false information and scams (诈骗). For example, before the gaokao results are released, there might be people claiming to be admissions officers and saying they can offer favors for candidates and can get them into well-known colleges. Meanwhile, don’t worry about tuition fees! To ensure that no student will drop out due to financial difficulties, China has set up a national education support system. The official website of China National Center for Student Financial Aid and its WeChat account have a detailed introduction of support rules and standards. Local authorities have also set up hotlines to introduce favorable policies and offer advice for applying for financial support.
